Even though you may not have recognised what has been happening for all of your life, you have at all times been creating, expanding and changing your ego personality. The well meaning but controlling ego personality prevents you from improving your aware-will consciousness, which would otherwise empower you towards perfect alignment of your Personal Consciousness with Universal Principles (Cosmic Consciousness).
When Personal Consciousness aligns with Cosmic Consciousness, ego personality becomes irrelevant and dis-creates. This is because consciousness eliminates personality ego in the same way that light eliminates darkness.
Each of us is guided by circumstances, by our ego personality and occasionally by any Personal Consciousness we may have succeeded in developing. Personal Consciousness is the same as Soul.
In other words we have the potential to create our own soul, which merges with our Higher Self following the completion of each life time. The ego personality could and should be gone by the time we reach adulthood, or at least by the time we reach the age of 28 years. Often, around that time, people have nervous breakdowns, because they realise that somehow they have failed to grow up to be effective and efficient adults. My article on The Nature of Illness describes this process of failure and how to counteract and heal it.
The Goal of each life path is to achieve the ability to knowingly and intentionally enjoy success and fun in the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of life and to retain this ability as potential for subsequent lifetimes. But it gets lost and suppressed by the ego personality, which has been programmed by ourselves during infancy, childhood and adolescence to take over control and responsibility.
The Purpose of each person’s life path is to help them to facilitate and eventually achieve the goal of life mastery, which is the same as sanity, personal transformation, salvation and expanded consciousness. Life Mastery should be attained by the age of 28 years or thereabouts, but this doesn’t happen. The significance of sanity, personal transformation, salvation and expanded consciousness is exactly the same, so far as this article is concerned. I shall usually refer to their achievement as life mastery.
Your individual life path is determined by your Life Path Type, your Belief System Type and your Personality Type, all three of which are potentially but not actually under your control and your responsibility. You can become self actualised by taking control and responsibility for your own life.
Additionally, the moment by moment status of your life on its already operating life path involves your position on the Emotional Tone Scale and the other scales that parallel that scale. These scales describe the connection between your self as a human and your self as an immortal Higher Self. They include scales of emotion, communication, physiology, motion, identification, relationships, knowingness, responsibility awareness, sense of time, etc. all of which aspects of your life path you need to travel in order to attain life mastery.
Your individual life path is also affected by the impacts of your family, your groups, your society, your nation and the impact of humanity itself, all of which impacts operate in accordance with recognisable universal principles.
THE NINE PERSONALITY TYPES
In order best to protect ourselves when we are infants, children and adolescents we adopt appropriate ego personality traits from nine personality types. These traits become permanent parts of our ego personality unless we update our beliefs. We become a mixture of Perfectionist, Carer, Performer, Romantic, Observer, Questioner, Adventurer, Asserter & Peacemaker, depending upon the circumstances of our infancy, childhood, adolescence and young adulthood. Their interaction is best understood by using the enneagram, a diagram that describes how each ego personality type relates to the other eight.
Each of these apparently valuable ego personalities brings with it an unavoidable negativity. The nine corresponding negativities, which come into action whenever we fail to successfully BE our chosen personality type, are Anger (perfectionist), Pride (carer), Deception (performer), Envy (romantic), Greed (observer), Fear (questioner), Gluttony (adventurer), Lust (asserter) and Sloth (peacemaker).
Seven of these are the so called deadly sins of Christianity. The so called sins that Christianity omitted are The Performer (Deception) and The Questioner (Fear), which are, of course the underlying basis for all the others. In other words Deception (both intentional and unintentional) and the resulting Fear of the consequences are the influences that lie behind the error prone human condition.
THE INSTINCTUAL, PERCEPTUAL AND INTELLECTUAL PERSONALITY TYPES
The Nine Personality Types are divided into three groups; these being the instinctual, perceptual and intellectual groups. Any continuingly balancing combination of paths, selected from all nine personality types, will eventually lead you, your family, your group, your society or your nation to success and fun.
The Instinct Based group includes The Asserter Path, The Peacemaker Path and The Perfectionist Path.
The Feeling Based group includes The Carer Path, The Actor Path and The Romantic Path and
The Intellect Based Group includes The Observer, The Questioner and The Adventurer.
THE FOUR BELIEF SYSTEM TYPES
The life path you have inadvertently already chosen from the nine personality types and along which you need to more consciously move was established by the religion, philosophy or other belief systems in which you were raised. All belief systems can be divided into four types. Your already established belief system will be a self chosen combination of elements from all four.
If your life reflects the manipulative emotional appeal of Type One beliefs, they will include obsessive fears, sympathies and destructive tendencies, with a tendency to hate yourself and to hate others. Fundamentalist religions, unthinking violence, group terrorism and state terrorism all reflect this type of belief.
If your life reflects the need and security attributes of Type Two beliefs, they will reflect the social customs and common knowledge to which you have subordinated your power and upon which you consequently depend
If your life reflects Type Three beliefs you will consider them as based upon factual evidence, objecting strongly to the idea that you have a belief system, preferring to call your way of living “scientific” or “based upon hard objective fact”. Adolescents and most scientists rely upon type three beliefs.
If your life reflects Type Four beliefs you will realise that you intentionally create and replace your beliefs for more appropriate ones whenever new beliefs are seen to be more relevant. You will have already achieved a degree of sanity, self transformation, salvation, life mastery and expanded personal consciousness. The great religious, social and scientific leaders of the past all relied upon type four beliefs.
THE EMOTIONAL TONE SCALE
To begin to identify the range of your normally applicable emotional tone levels and to understand the conditions associated with each tone levels study the following very detailed link:
http://freezoneamerica.org/Clearbird/Clearbird2004/appendix_a/scales.htm#TONE%20scaleFULL
or, alternatively the somewhat less detailed official Church of Scientology version at
http://testing.dianetics.org/en_US/chart/index.html
Please realise that human tone levels only apply to the part of the scale between 0.0 and 4.0 and that higher and lower levels additionally apply to aware-will (which the Scientologists call The Thetan). Aware-Will is able to exist at any point on the various scales and is in fact the creator of the states of unawareness and lack of will power in which it finds itself.
Self determined persons are able to operate at the tone level of action (20:00) and Life Masters are able to operate (conceptually) at all levels, although the human condition restricts their ability so far as mastery over physical phenomena are concerned. The potential for mastery over physical conditions is there but this is rarely attained, because the negative ego belief that it cannot happen still gets in the way.
As long as ego personality remains the link between each human and their environment, all achievements are likely to be limited to those that correspond with already established human experience.
The emotional Tone Scale itself, against which associated conditions are calibrated is as follows:
4.0 Enthusiasm
3.0 Conservatism
2.5 Boredom
2.0 Antagonism
1.8 Pain
1.5 Anger
1.2 No Sympathy
1.1 Covert Hostility
1.0 Fear
0.9 Sympathy
0.8 Propitiation
0.5 Grief
0.375 Making Amends
0.05 Apathy
0.0 Being a Body (Death)
DISCOVERING YOUR ALREADY ESTABLISHED PATH
The most objective way to identify your life path, prior to taking back control and responsibility for it is to familiarise yourself with the previously described subjects (also listed below):
Aware-Will
Cosmic Consciousness
Personal Consciousness
Soul
The specific Life Path Types that relate to your own life, as determined by your own opinion
The specific Belief System Types that relate to your own life, as determined by your own opinion
The specific Personality Types that relate to your own life, as determined by your own opinion
Your own normally applicable emotional tone level, as determined by your own opinion
Your own normally applicable parallel conditions, as determined by your own opinion
For example: You might decide that your life path is primarily based upon feeling, that your belief system is primarily based upon social customs and common knowledge; that your personality (if it is one of the three feeling types) might be The Carer and your normally applicable emotional tone level might be Sympathy, which will as always be accompanied by all the other life defining conditions that correspond with the emotional tone level of sympathy.
DISCOVERING YOUR ALREADY ESTABLISHED PATH - continued
When you have used your own personal observations to identify your own path type, belief system type, personality type and range of applicable emotional tones on the emotional tone scale, and when you have considered the relevance of the accompanying scales, you will have become very well informed by your self about the person you have unknowingly created your self to be.
You will have discovered that without doing anything more than understanding the current state of your self, you have changed very significantly towards becoming the master of your life. The more you understand that your ego personality is covering up and suppressing your aware-will-consciousness self the more easily you will move along your life path.
Everything you have done in your life until now is perfect, just the way it is, because life follows the universal principle of cause and effect. However many times you make mistakes, the universe re arranges the consequences so that you can overcome the mistake.
The consideration of all of your past experiences, both causes and observed effects, may be used to develop your further movement towards life mastery. If your life has been shit, then the perfection lies in the fact that it can still be transformed into fertiliser.
Most people have been brainwashed by their parents, teachers, religious dogmas and other authoritarian influences. Unravelling the brainwashing to which you have been subjected is the best foundation for progress towards real life mastery, transformation, awakening, enlightenment, salvation or whichever other label you may choose to use to describe the awakening of your personal consciousness.
There is only one Cosmic Consciousness, and it is the alignment of each personal consciousness with Cosmic Consciousness that leads to empowerment. Belief Systems play no part in Personal Consciousness, being actually the cause of Personal Unconsciousness. Personal Consciousness is all about discovery of the real aware-will self.
Changing your path type, belief system type and personality type for the better will happen effortlessly, but only if you do it for your own purposes, free from any outside interference. Your life path, belief system and ego personality are, in any case interlinked, so some understanding of how this linked mechanism operates is essential. Eventually you will be able to operate with equal effectiveness from all nine enneagram points of view.
Apart from the hell or heaven that some might consider this world to be, there is no other hell. There is no other heaven. If you can’t move towards your concept of heaven and away from your concept of hell whilst you are here, you are not going to do it elsewhere. Time changes everything except you, and it will even change you for the better if you allow it to do so.
Recognising that every situation into which you might have mired yourself is absolutely perfect for you to fully experience in order to learn how to enjoy or avoid such situations in the future is itself a path.
SUPPORTING PATHS
Some religions, philosophies, sciences and other standardised belief systems may be appropriate for all ego personality types. Others are only appropriate for one ego personality type.
For the instinctual type of ego personality; i.e. the Asserter, Peacemaker and Perfectionist, it is suggested that you familiarise yourself with kahuna shamanism, etc. (more to add) and that you avoid intellectual belief systems.
For the feeling type of ego personality; i.e. the Carer, Performer and Romantic, it is suggested that you familiarise yourself with Arnold Patent’s Universal Principles, etc (more to add) and that you avoid intellectual belief systems.
For the intellectual type of ego personality; i.e. the Observer, Questioner and Adventurer, it is suggested that you familiarise yourself with Clearbird’s cleaned up version of Scientology, etc. (more to add). It is very important that intellectual ego personalities realise that their connection with Spirit is via feelings and not intellect. Intellect may be regarded only as a tool for creating the illusory explanations craved by Observers, Questioners and Adventurers. However, intellect is not the be all and end all of existence.
KRISHNAMURTI’S TEACHING
Please be aware that there is an alternative viewpoint regarding life paths, which suggests that there is no such thing as a life path, and that one is already where one needs to be.
The following statement was written by Krishnamurti himself on October 21, 1980 in which he summarizes the teachings. It may be copied and used provided this is done in its entirety. No editing or change of any kind is permitted. No extracts may be used.
"The core of Krishnamurti's teaching is contained in the statement he made in 1929 when he said: 'Truth is a pathless land'. Man cannot come to it through any organization, through any creed, through any dogma, priest or ritual, not through any philosophic knowledge or psychological technique. He has to find it through the mirror of relationship, through the understanding of the contents of his own mind, through observation and not through intellectual analysis or introspective dissection. Man has built in himself images as a fence of security - religious, political, personal. These manifest as symbols, ideas, beliefs. The burden of these images dominates man's thinking, his relationships and his daily life. These images are the causes of our problems for they divide man from man. His perception of life is shaped by the concepts already established in his mind. The content of his consciousness is his entire existence. This content is common to all humanity. The individuality is the name, the form and superficial culture he acquires from tradition and environment. The uniqueness of man does not lie in the superficial but in complete freedom from the content of his consciousness, which is common to all mankind. So he is not an individual.
Freedom is not a reaction; freedom is not a choice. It is man's pretence that because he has choice he is free. Freedom is pure observation without direction, without fear of punishment and reward. Freedom is without motive; freedom is not at the end of the evolution of man but lies in the first step of his existence. In observation one begins to discover the lack of freedom. Freedom is found in the choiceless awareness of our daily existence and activity. Thought is time. Thought is born of experience and knowledge which are inseparable from time and the past. Time is the psychological enemy of man. Our action is based on knowledge and therefore time, so man is always a slave to the past. Thought is ever-limited and so we live in constant conflict and struggle. There is no psychological evolution.
When man becomes aware of the movement of his own thoughts he will see the division between the thinker and thought, the observer and the observed, the experiencer and the experience. He will discover that this division is an illusion. Then only is there pure observation which is insight without any shadow of the past or of time. This timeless insight brings about a deep radical mutation in the mind.
Total negation is the essence of the positive. When there is negation of all those things that thought has brought about psychologically, only then is there love, which is compassion and intelligence."
