Self Assessment

Self assessment is a very useful starting point on each person’s journey to life mastery. Any proven personality assessment system is acceptable, provided that it can be taken again and again to determine how much progress has been made is acceptable. This web site recommends the ancient enneagram system that relates to both ancient and modern ideas on psychological types.

The "enneagram" identifies, describes and explores the peculiar ways that each of us has chosen to limit ourselves in order to most effectively overcome the problems of infancy, childhood, adolescence and young adulthood. The reasons for this self limitation were valid at the time we instituted them, but many years later, when we are well past young adulthood, we are mostly still stuck in the same limitations. Problems in living and a failure to be the masters of our own lives are the result.

Many problems and failures can be converted to opportunities and successes if you become familiar with the basics of the enneagram system. There is no need to become an expert on the enneagram. All you need is enough familiarity to do the self assessment. You will then notice more of the things in your life that correspond with your personality type. That in turn enables you to change in any way you choose.

There are various internet enneagram test sites that will enable you to complete a free self assessment and to compare it with the results indicated by other internet enneagram test sites.

The effectiveness of the enneagram can be proven by using it. It requires only a little understanding and experience of the diagram to develop a similar understanding and knowledge of the self. The enneagram has many other applications beyond that of personality analysis. For the purposes of personality analysis, nine tendencies or passions are identified as being sufficient to describe every personality.

Normally each person becomes stuck in the tendency that most supported their infancy. This becomes the single focus of their life. However, the single focus ignores the eight other tendencies, resulting in unnecessary difficulties in life. By understanding the nine personality types, each person becomes to some extent the master of all of them, able to switch intentionally between them whenever that is appropriate. Life mastery improves as a result.

The nine tendencies correspond with the so called seven deadly sins of Christianity, plus the additional ”sins” of Deception and Fear, which The Christians for some reason best known to themselves left out. The seven deadly sins, which are really only instinctual and belief system driven responses to external stimuli, are Anger, Pride, Envy, Avarice, Gluttony, Lust and Sloth. Each deadly sin, passion or tendency may be converted into its opposite tendency, which is a virtue.

An Assessment Tool does not provide a map of the individual.  All that it shows is the unbalanced responses to life that are preventing that individual from existing as a fully active, fearless and truth based individual. In other words, understanding the principles that underpin the assessments can lead to an individual who is free from the reactive tendencies they created to protect themselves during the vulnerable times of infancy, childhood, adolescence and young adulthood.

The enneagram assessment tool highlights features, characteristics and attributes that need to be balanced, facilitating the elimination of weaknesses and developing strengths.  As a consequence, life becomes more “user friendly”.

Each individual is a dynamic being who can evolve through experience and new knowledge.   A completed individual is considered to be one who routinely gains knowledge (spiritual power) from their everyday experiences.

The input, alignment and conclusions relating to all ideas must be by the person to whom the assessment relates, with no input, alignment or conclusions from anyone else being permitted unless it has been completely validated by the person, using multiple viewpoints in order to achieve validation.

A self assessment should be completed when life mastery training begins and again after the completion of each step towards life mastery.

Any other psychologically validated Personality Assessment system can be used, provided only that it is under the exclusive control, responsibility and knowledge of the person assessed, and providing that it quantifies the observable tendencies into which that particular assessment tool sub-divides human personality. There is a direct correlation between the enneagram types and the psychological classifications into which psychologists usually place their clients.
